Description

The station is decorated to celebrate the opening of the Blackwall Tunnel, and the Prince of Wales came to open it. Under the bridge men stand outside the Railway Tavern, with a horse-drawn omnibus on the right. Excited children jostle in the foreground. The Blackwall tunnel was at this time the longest underwater tunnel in the world. It took 6 years to build and over 600 people had to be moved out of their houses as many streets around the tunnel had to be demolished.
