Description

Bhor Ghat re-alignment under construction, view from Tunnel number 1 towards Tunnel number 2. A scene during the rebuilding of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) through the Bhor Ghat. The line is being moved and new tunnels and track have to be built through this 'ghat' or mountain pass. The Bhor Ghat route between Bombay and Pune runs for approximately 26 kilometres and has about 26 tunnels. The GIPR was opened in 1853 between Bombay and Thane. The line was extended through the Bhor Ghat to Deccan in 1861.
