Railway workers painting a locomotive at Doncaster works, 28 November 1947. This is one of the last London & North Eastern Railway locomotives to be manufactured before the railways were nationalised. The railway network previously consisted of four separate companies: London & North Eastern Railway, Great Western Railway, London, Midland & Scottish Railway and Southern Railway. British Railways remained nationalised until 1994.
