Description

Portrait of Robert Stephenson, about 1840. Robert Stephenson was a prominent engineer in the early days of the railways. He designed pioneering locomotives, including 'Rocket' and worked on the Stockton & Darlington Railway with his father, and on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. He also engineered the London to Birmingham line, and built imposing railway bridges, including the Britannia bridge over the Menai straits.
