River Wye at Monsal Dale, about 1900. Monsal Dale was on the Rowsley to New Mills extension of the Midland Railway. This line was built to increase trade across the Pennines, between the cotton mills of Lancashire and the coalfields of Nottinghamshire. However, it was also used by tourists visiting the Derbyshire Dales.
