Description

Heavy load on a Great Western Railway 'Crocodile' wagon at St Pancras station. The wagon is capable of holding 65 tonnes of freight. Heavy goods like this were usually transported by rail at this time. Competition from canals had declined rapidly with the coming of the railways. Road transport was starting to become a serious rival for the transportation of freight, although the heaviest loads still had to be transported by rail.
