Records of all the goods carried by the railways were kept and filed so that they could be referred to. Accounts records and bills were kept as well as records of the goods that were carried and the service they were carried on. As a result the files were very extensive and a special filing system, 'Kardex', was used by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway to keep their files in order.
