Worker in the steel foundry at Horwich works, 1919. This is where steel, used for building locomotives, was melted and poured into moulds. At this time there were few health and safety measures in place. Workers wore little protective clothing. They also risked breathing in dangerous chemicals when smelting metal as there was little ventilation.
