Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway electric locomotive, 26 July 1917. At this time several lines in Lancashire and Manchester had become electrified. Locomotive drivers had to learn new skills in order to drive electric locomotives instead of steam locomotives. Drivers could now sit in a glazed cab, and therefore had a better view of where they were going, and had controls that were easier to use.
