This photograph was taken during the First World War. The dolls, dressed as nurses are being sold for charity as part of the war effort. They are being sold in connection with an ambulance train that toured Lancashire and Yorkshire before being taken to France. It was used there to take wounded and sick soldiers to hospital, for 'comforts for the Railway Troops in France'.
