Horses being loaded onto a train at Ormskirk, Lancashire, 11 December 1914. These horses are to be taken to Europe to be used by soldiers fighting in the First World War. Horses and other animals were often transported by train at this time. They were carried in ventilated horse boxes which could hold food and could be easily cleaned out. Some horse boxes had a passenger compartment for a groom to accompany the horse.
