Several lines on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway were electrified at the beginning of the 20th century. At this time there were discussions to electrify more because so much traffic used the lines, especially around Liverpool and Manchester. At this time electric trains were being used in other urban areas such as around Newcastle and in London.
