Description

Passenger train, pulled by an A4 class 4-6-2 locomotive at King's Cross. Steam locomotives were still common in the 1950s. However, steam traction was starting to be phased out in favour of diesel and electric locomotives in the 1950s and 1960s. At this time the railways were losing money and it was hoped that more modern traction, although expensive, would attract more passengers and industries to use the railways as services would be made faster and more reliable.
"Quicksilver" had been built by the London & North Eastern Railway in 1935, but by 1956 was owned and operated by the nationalised British Railways.
