Deltic locomotive hauling an express passenger train at Hatfield, Hertfordshire, 10 September 1959. The Diesel Electric Deltics were built by the English Electric company, and first ran on the East Coast Main Line in 1955. At this time they were still on trial, but the trial was successful and more Deltics were built in the 1960s. When they were first built, they were the most powerful diesel locomotives in the world.
