Diesel locomotive, 1957

Passenger train pulled by a diesel locomotive number D5500 at Clacton station, Essex, 11 November 1957. Steam traction was starting to be phased out in favour of diesel and electric locomotives in the 1950s and 1960s. At this time the railways were losing money and it was hoped that more modern traction, although expensive, would attract more passengers and industries to use the railways as services would be made faster and more reliable.
