A class A1 4-6-2 locomotive number 60117 "Boris Russell" on a turntable at King's Cross motive power depot, 1 September 1950. Turntables were used to transfer locomotives between tracks. They were used in engine sheds, stations and junctions. Initially turntables were handcranked, but by this time locomotives were becoming larger and longer, and so bigger, powered, turntables were built.
