Signalman at Rossington Level crossing, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, 29 November 1960. The signalman was responsible for letting trains through at junctions and letting trains overtake each other. The job carried a lot of responsibility and formal training was given. Some signalmen attending Signalling school. These days signalling is carried out by a team of people who are responsible for a large area, rather than by one signalman at each station.
