Passengers boarding a train, about 1905. The passengers were probably taking a day trip. At this time it was becoming common to go on annual summer outings. People visited the countryside or seaside, on holiday or a day trip. Many people took day trips on public holidays. These were the only days when they could go away if they worked for 6 days a week and as a result the trains were very crowded on public holidays.
