Men dresing slate at Blaenau Ffestiniog, about 1910. The railway at Blaenau Ffestiniog opened in 1836, to carry slate to the port of Portmadog. This helped the local economy as the town was able to sell more slate all over Britain. The slate industry was a major part of the Welsh economy although by this time it was going into decline.
