Isambard Kingdom Brunel, standing to the far right, with his colleagues at the launch of his ship the SS Great Eastern in 1857. The seated man on the left is Robert Stephenson, designer of the pioneering steam locomotive, Rocket. Brunel is one of the best known engineers of the nineteenth century. He was responsible for building the Great Western Railway, and structures such as the Saltash Bridge in Cornwall and the Clifton Suspension bridge in Bristol.
