Description

One of the guard's main responsibilities was the safety of the train and its passengers. He walked the length of the platform and ensured that all the passengers had boarded the train and all the doors were closed. He then signalled to the driver that the train was ready to go. He also looked after luggage, animals and young children travelling alone.
