This photograph was one of a series taken to advertise holidays in Cornwall, at locations served by the Great Western Railway's lines. Photographs like this were often displayed inside railway carriages. St Ives was a popular holiday resort at this time and in the summer the town was crowded with tourists. For most people the beach was the focus of their holiday and where most people spent their time. People swam, sunbathed, played games or built sandcastles.
