Description

At this time the Great Western Railway's carriages had compartments although by the 1930s the other railway companies had begun to adopt open plan carriages. The earliest railway carriages all had compartments. Open plan carriages were introduced in 1874 in Pullman cars, although many passengers preferred the privacy of a carriage. Models posed for this photograph, which was taken for publicity purposes.
