A photograph of a group boys on board a ship sailing from Southampton for Southern Rhodesia, taken by an unknown photographer for the Daily Herald newspaper on 18 November, 1946. The boys were travelling to Southern Rhodesia on the liner 'Capetown Castle' to be educated at the Fairbridge Memorial College - one of many set up by Kingsley Fairbridge as part of the Child Emigration Society - at Indune, Bulawayo. They would receive vocational training and have the opportunity to go to university which they would not have otherwise had, being from bereaved or financially insecure homes.
