Description

A photograph of 13-year-old Colin Wadsworth from Huddersfield, Yorkshire, having his clothing marked with his name before he sets off for Southern Rhodesia from Southampton, taken by an unknown photographer for the Daily Herald newspaper on 8 January, 1947. A party of 25 boys were due to travel to Southern Rhodesia in the liner 'Capetown Castle' in order to be educated at the Fairbridge Memorial College (one of many set up by Kingsley Fairbridge as part of the Child Emigration Society) at Indune, Bulawayo, receive vocational training and have the opportunity to go to university which they would not have otherwise had having come from bereaved or financially insecure homes.
