A photograph of the Moss family on the porch of their house in Kingston, Jamaica, taken by Ron Burton for the Daily Herald newspaper on 2 August, 1962. Mr Dirrell Moss, Mrs Vera Moss, Carmen aged 9, Erroll aged 7, Lorna aged 5, Elaine aged 2, and Annette aged 3. The family were planning to emigrate to England where they hoped to begin a new life. Mr Moss, a printer by trade, would have heard about the job opportunities in Britain. The American government had limited the numbers of Caribbean migrants allowed into the United States in 1952, thereby increasing the amount of immigration to Britain.
