Miners trapped under broken pit-props and rock. Despite improvements in technology and stricter health and safety regulations, mining remains a dangerous occupation. In November 2004, 166 miners were killed in China following an explosion inside a mine. Illustration from 'Underground life, or, Mines and miners' by Louis Simonin (1830-1886), published in London in 1869.
