Description

'Piece of an herb growing on dung-hills, called fat-hen' (Fig 2). Fat hen is a species of orache, a plant sometimes grown as a substitute for spinach. 'Section of a reed from Portugal', (Fig 3). Illustration from 'Essays on the microscope' by George Adams (1750-1795), published in London in 1787. Adams was instrument maker to King George III.
