In 1958 Mike Hawthorn (1929-1959) became the first Briton to win the formula One (F1) World Championship. His F1 career lasted from 1952 to 1958, during which time he won 3 races and attained 4 pole positions from 45 starts. He won the World Championship driving for Ferrari.
