Description

Illustration of military surgeon Baron Jean Dominique Larrey (1766-1842) treating wounded soldiers. Patients could be carried in the side-panniers of the camel ambulance. Larrey served in Napoleon's (1769-1821) campaigns from 1797. He became head of the army medical departments and introduced field hospital and ambulance services. From 'Description de l'Egypte, ou Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l'Expedition de l'Armee francaise', (Paris, 1809-1830). The book, ('Description of Egypt' in English), documents Napoleon's (1769-1821) military and scientific expedition to Egypt in 1798.
