The Avenue of the Rue des Nations (Street of Nations), from the moving pavement. This 'novel mode of locomotion' was formed of a 'continuous platform of wood, divided ingeniously into sections, each section having a convex and concave end, each fitting into the next section, so arranged that it could pas round any curve, the whole moving by electricity upon unseen rollers beneath, and pasing thus round almost the whole area of the Exhibition'. Illustration from 'The Paris exhibition 1900: the art journal', edited by D Croal Thomson, published in London in 1901.
