Description

Engraving by Kohl, showing a lighthouse powered by an electric arc lamp illuminating a steam tug-boat which is pulling a sailing ship into harbour. Frederick Holmes' electric arc lamp was developed in 1857. Electric lights were far more powerful than candles or oil lamps which were used previously, making navigation at night far safer for shipping. Illustration from 'Electricity and Magnetism' by Amedee Guillemin (1826-1893), published in London in 1891.
