Description

Engraving by Boilly after de Sainson, showing a man from the island of Vava'u, now part of Tonga, and below, a building for housing canoes. Illustration from 'Voyage pittoresque autour du monde' ('Picturesque voyage round the world') by Jules Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), published in Paris, 1834-1835. This work is based on his travels between 1826 and 1829, and includes extracts of the voyages of other navigators such as James Cook, Magellan, Tasman and Duperrey.
