© Science Museum / Science & Society Picture Library

Engraving by J Pas showing cases of Sycosis barbae and Sycosis capilli. Sycosis barbae or barber's itch is an inflammation, caused by fungus or a staphylococcal infection, of the hair follicles where skin has been shaved. S capilli here would seem to be a related condition found in the scalp. Illustration from 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature' published in London, 1810-1829.
