Description

Engraving by J Pas showing Chinese men on a treadmill which turns a waterwheel to irrigate the land. The water is lifted in bamboo tubes. Artistic license has been enthusiastically employed to depict one of the men smoking opium. Illustration from 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature' published in London, 1810-1829.
