Engraving by J Pass of English inventor Joseph Bramah's (1749-1814) fire engine. Bramah also designed a beer machine used at the bar of public houses, a safety lock which he manufactured in partnership with Henry Maudslay (1771-1831), and a machine for printing bank notes. Bramah also invented a hydraulic press for shaping pieces of iron and steel, considered one of the great instruments of the industrial revolution. Illustration from 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature' published in London, 1810-1829.
