Description

Illustration of an arc light invented by Sir Hiram Maxim (1840-1916), showing the mechanism for controlling the carbon points as they are worn away. Maxim was founder and chief engineer of the United States Electric Lighting Company. From 'Marvels of electricity and magnetism', by Henry Frith (b 1840), published sometime in the 1880s.
