A photographic view of the seafront at Dawlish in Devon, as seen from the railway station, with part of the track in the foreground, and bathing machines in the distance. The photograph was published by Francis Bedford & Co. As part of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's (1806-1859) Atmospheric Railway, on 30 May 1846 the first passenger train on this route ran from Exeter to Dawlish. This brought great prosperity to what was once a small fishing town as rich families travelled to newly built houses for the summer season.
