A photograph of members of a British anti-aircraft battery, taken by Calcraft for the Daily Herald newspaper on 12 October, 1943. At 19.09 hrs on 16 August 1943, the battery had shot down a German Messerschmidt 109 fighter plane from a height of 34,000 feet - thought to be "a record feat in the history of A-A gunnery". Here they have been presented with a piece of the aircraft as a memento. Anti-aircraft batteries commonly had mixed crews of men and women.
