A photograph of boxer Henry Armstrong (1912-1988) retaining the world welterweight championship, taken by Roper for the Daily Herald newspaper on 25 May, 1939. Armstrong is the only professional boxer ever to hold three world championship titles simultaneously. His beaten opponent was the British boxer, Ernie Roderick. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
