A photograph of a crowd of people at the opening of the Children's Zoo at London Zoo, taken by Edward Malindine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 22 May 1939. The popular comics Elsie and Doris Waters are seated amongst an excited crowd of children. Each woman holds both a child and a lion cub on her lap - under the watchful eye of a zoo keeper. Meanwhile, in the background on the left, a small boy pulls a face for the camera. London Zoo was founded for the scientific study of animals in 1829, opening to the public in 1847. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
