Description

Vast crowds gathered to see the launch of RMS Queen Elizabeth from Clydesbank, Scotland. Thousands of people watch the launch. Many have climbed dock side cranes - alongside cameramen trying to get the best vantage point. RMS Queen Elizabeth launched without the presence of King George VI, due to the deteriorating political situation in Europe. With the outbreak of World War Two, the superliner was painted grey and the maiden voyage was postponed. RMS Queen Elizabeth eventually sailed to New York on 3 March 1940. Photograph taken by an unknown photographer for the Daily Herald newspaper.
