Description

A photograph of preparations for the opening of the Radiolympia Exhibition at Olympia, taken by Edward Malindine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 23 August, 1938. Vera Lynn (born 1917) rehearses with an orchestra on the set of a cruise ship. An Emitron camera can be seen on the right. Popular singer Vera Lynn made her first radio broadcast in 1935, singing with the Joe Los Orchestra. She is best known for her commitment to the war effort. As 'The Force's Sweetheart' Vera Lynn sang popular, sentimental tunes to rally the troops during World War Two. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
