A photograph of trainees at the Royal Naval School of Photography, taken by Reuben Saidman for the Daily Herald newspaper on 16 February, 1938. The school, situated at HMS Excellent, Whale Island, Portsmouth, ran courses on photography and film. The trainees are using a variety of field cameras. Field camera design had remained virtually unchanged since the 1880s. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
