A photograph of four Dutch socialists who cycled from Holland to Manchester for the Esperanto Conference, taken by Tomlin for the Daily Herald newspaper on 11 August, 1936. The men are pointing to the placard pinned to one of the party's chest, which reads 'World Peace Through Esperanto'. Dr L L Zamenhof (1859-1917) first published Esperanto in 1887, under the pseudonym 'Dr Esperanto'. The language was designed to facilitate international, cross-cultural communication. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
