A photograph of a Romany family sitting around a cooking fire in an encampment, taken by Tomlin for the Daily Herald newspaper on 3 June, 1935. This family of travelling Romany people have set up camp in advance of the Derby horse race. Their tent and horse-drawn wagon are also visible. During the 19th century, extended Romany families travelled around the country following seasonal agricultural work. In the 20th century, such work began to disappear, and legislation was passed discouraging stopping on traditional camping sites. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
