A photograph of coopers at Watney's Brewery in Mortlake, London, taken by George Woodbine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 16 October, 1934. The young man in the barrel is about to be rolled around the brewery yard by his work mates - an initiation ceremony for apprentice coopers. Brewerys traditionally employed large numbers of coopers. Wooden barrels transported and stored the beer. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
