A photograph of Major Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, lifting up two children in his arms, taken by Woodbine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 1 October, 1934. The two children and Major Elliot are all drinking milk. The minister was visiting Addison Gardens School, where pupils could now have milk for a halfpenny a day, to highlight his campaign. In 1946, the School Milk Act introduced free milk for all pupils under eighteen. Secretary of State Margaret Thatcher ended universal free school milk during the 1970s.
