Horses pulling a wagon on a towpath at Midford, 13 July 1898. This photograph was taken by the Midland Railway's publicity department. Photographs like this were often hung in railway carriages, for decoration and to advertise destinations served by the railway. The canals had declined rapidly when the railways arrived and by the end of the 19th century many had closed down.
