A photograph of trainee recruits at Portsmouth naval barracks receiving their issue of rum, taken by George Woodbine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 5 March, 1933. The tradition of sailors receiving a daily ration of rum, or grog, goes back to the mid eighteenth century. The last official rum issue for the Royal Navy took place in July, 1970. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
